The Institute of Development and Education for Africa (IDEA), Inc. will present Profile of African Universities in an effort to creating network among prominent African higher institutions of learning and setting the tone for exchange of ideas and experiences, as well as forging educational discourse and dialogue among the universities. The Profile will be presented in alphabetical order and will feature the establishment, mission and objectives, administration, faculty and programs of the respective universities.

Addis Ababa University

Addis Ababa University was founded by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1950 and is the first higher education of learning of the country. It was then known as University College of Addis Ababa (UCAA), but following the abortive coup d’etat of 1960, the Emperor granted his palace to be the main campus (Sidist Kilo) of the University, and in 1962 UCAA was renamed Haile Selassie I University (HSIU). Following the 1974 Ethiopian revolution, the University was again renamed Addis Ababa University (AAU).

Mission:

According to the official website of the University, the mission of AAU is to transmit, develop, disseminate and preserve knowledge relevant to the solutions of the problems of development of the country through student-centered quality teaching, research scholarship, creative application of existing knowledge and provision of services to the community.

Objectives:

  1. Facilitate and maintain excellence in teaching and research
  2. Develop the University into a regional center of excellence in both its undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
  3. Expand the service of the University to the community through a variety of courses and programs through par-time study, distance learning, purpose-designed training with non-credit courses and workshops.
